The Biggest Loser's Biggest Couple

The Biggest Loser's Biggest Couple

In this article of In Touch Weekly Magazine, it tells of a couple thats trying their best to lose weight. They're trying to lose weight together. The couple runs a catering business. Ed Brantley, who, along with his wife Heba Salama, is one half of the heaviest couple on the NBC reality show. "I'm a foodie and i love working with food, but it's a constant temptation," Ed, a chef who weighs 335 pounds at 31 years of age. His wife Heba weighs 294 pounds at 30 years of age. They both hopes that the show will give them a wake up call. Ed says that he loves eating food; it's what pays his bills. Heba says she'll be happy to get below 200 pounds.

I chose this article because it deals with the pleasure from the ID and the motivation to want to lose the weight. The ID (found in Chapter 11) is whats telling them to eat the food. Ed is a chef so he's always working with food. It's true that food can be a temptation also. What motivates them to want to lose the weight? Motivation (found in Chapter 8) is the factors that influence the initiation, direction, intensity, and persistence of behavior. The couple may have kids that will need them one day, so they decided to lose the weight. They know that they both have a purpose in life so they know it would be right for them to do something about their weight.

thisis a very good topic. I wish I would have thought of this show. I agree that the ID is the basic component of what causes people to eat more than they should. Eating is a basic need and the ID tells us what we are "entittled" to. This is also a good example of the Super Ego not being in check. In addition to these basic factors, there are many reasons that people over eat, depression, comfort, to replace another basic need that is absent in their lives. It is harder to break the habit of over eating than to break a Herione addiction because food is something that we have to be around to survive. We need to start educating people from early ages about realistic nutritional habits and insurance companies should be more involved in prevention; its cheaper than correction.

I agree that the ID is the element that is causing the couple to overeat. They ID operates on the pleasure principle and eating gives them pleasure since they work with food daily. Their Super Ego, which strives for perfection, is not balancing out their ID. I also agree that they have a motivation to lose weight and that is why they are going on the show. They want to make a physiological change in order to have a better future. This is a very unique show to relate to psychology. The couples weight problems could be caused by several other things we have talked about in class including depression and stress problems. Good Project!

This is very well written. Other things could cause them to over eat such as stress, little time, anxiety, and upsetting life styles.I also agree that the ID is out of balance and needes to be under controll.
